Defilements are progressively eradicated at the four stages of enlightenment : the stage of streamwinner, sotapanna, the stage of the once-returner, sagadakami, the stage of the non-returner, anagami, and the stage of arahat, the perfected one. The arahat who has eradicated all defilements, will not be reborn when he has passed away.
